Advanced World Clock

A time zone is a region of the Earth that follows a uniform standard time. Time zones exist because the Earth rotates on its axis, causing different parts of the world to experience daylight at different hours. Rather than everyone using local solar time (which would create thousands of different times), the world is divided into 24 primary time zones, each roughly 15° of longitude wide. Each zone is typically offset by one hour from its neighbors, referenced to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks. It is determined by atomic clocks and does not observe daylight saving time. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. While they are nearly identical for civil timekeeping, UTC is the scientific standard while GMT is a traditional time zone. For practical purposes, UTC+0 and GMT+0 produce the same clock time.

Daylight Saving Time shifts clocks forward by one hour during warmer months to extend evening daylight. When DST begins in spring, clocks "spring forward" one hour; when it ends in fall, they "fall back" one hour. This tool automatically accounts for DST based on each city's rules, so the times you see always reflect the correct local time. Not all regions observe DST — most of the tropics, parts of Asia, and parts of Africa stay on standard time year-round.

The International Date Line is an imaginary line at approximately 180° longitude in the Pacific Ocean. When you cross it from west to east, the calendar date decreases by one day (e.g., from Tuesday to Monday). When crossing from east to west, the date increases by one day. This line exists because the Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours, meaning different longitudes naturally experience different calendar dates at any given moment. Several countries have adjusted their borders to avoid splitting a single country across two different dates.

France holds the record with 12 time zones due to its overseas territories scattered across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. Russia spans 11 time zones across its massive landmass. The United States has 6 standard time zones (plus Hawaii and Alaska), while Australia has 3 standard time zones. Smaller countries may span just one time zone but still observe DST shifts.
